Bespoke extensions from an award-winning architect studio in Scotland, helping you realise the full potential of your home.
At Nicholas Lindsay Architects, we specialise in the design of bespoke extensions in Scotland. We enjoy transforming a home, creating a unique space for our clients to live and work. When considering extending a home, we are often faced with the question of ‘should we try to make the extension appear like it was always there’ or ‘embrace the fact it will likely always look like an extension’. We generally recommend the second option as even if we are able to source the same materials as the original house, it will have undergone years of weathering and the materials will always look different. We also believe that architecture should be of its time. We like to reference the existing house; a successful extension blends the new and old seamlessly. When working with a traditional or historic building, it is important to retain the character of the existing house. A contemporary extension is therefore well-suited this situation. The differing style of architecture will be easily understood allow the viewer to read the building.
An extension can also benefit the existing building in terms of thermal performance. Constructing over poorly insulated walls and windows will prevent heat loss from these elements.
Many clients in the residential sector have little experience of the building process in Scotland. We put great effort and care into guiding our clients through each stage - from design, planning permission, building warrants, technical design, tendering and construction through to completion of their new extension.
An extension should be a reflection of the inhabitant and our aim is to replicate their personality in the bespoke design.
